POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is a working athletic field maintenance crew leader position responsible for  the following duties:

  • scheduling maintenance operations
  • participating in and overseeing completion of maintenance tasks
  • assisting with the development and implementation of turf fertilization, chemical application, cultivation and irrigation programs
  • communicating status reports on maintenance operations and assuring field use schedules are adhered to.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides hands­on assistance and general supervision of athletic field maintenance using league and tournament schedules to prioritize work.
  • Trains employees on equipment and practices necessary to maintain a successful overall program, solving problems, keeping staff involved and motivated.
  • Delegates and assists in the completion of tasks. Operates equipment including, but not limited to tractors, backhoes, box blades, reel mowers, deep tine aerators, walk behind aerators, edgers, trimmers, rotary deck mowers and line cutters, painters and markers.
  • Accurately measures and marks fields, places and removes goals, fencing, bases, and pitching mounds.
  • Inspects and repairs fields, athletic lighting, scoreboards and irrigation and maintains safe clay to turf transition areas.
  • Conducts routine inspections of athletic field related grounds and facilities. Serves as the lead personnel in rain tarp application and removal.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of turf fertilization, chemical application, cultivation, and irrigation programs based on best management practices.
  • Coordinates usage of shared equipment, performs preventative maintenance on equipment, provides input and recommendations regarding soil amendments and rental equipment needed to manage work schedules.
  • Responsible for all tournament operations including: scheduling of personnel, working with officials, directors, and coordinators to discuss needs for tournaments; and, addressing needs of players, coaches and spectators.
  • Works directly with umpires and tournament directors to make proactive decisions in the halting of tournaments due to inclement weather.
  • Provides support for hosted and supported activities and special events.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature that may be obtained with 3 to 5 years of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency.
  • Five or more years of hands­on, in­field athletic field maintenance experience with three or more years of progressively responsible supervisory experience is required.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Work requires functioning as a crew leader while performing essentially the same work as those directed, and includes overseeing work quality, training, scheduling and completion of work assigned.

 

Work may require providing advice to others outside direct reporting relationships on specific problems or general policies. Contacts may require the consideration of different points of view to reach agreement. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.

 

This position receives direction. The employee normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. Because this position provides input regarding implementation of several maintenance related systems, there is some opportunity for discretion. Assignments are usually reviewed upon completion and communication with team members is essential.

 

Advanced work requires advanced skills and knowledge in approaches and systems, which affect the design and implementation of major programs and/or processes organization­wide. Independent judgment and decision­making abilities are necessary to apply technical skills effectively.

 

Intermediate ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Intermediate ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Basic ability to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or a series of numbers, names, and addresses.

 

Calculations are often used to determine rates of fertilizers, chemicals, and seed to be applied to a specific area; square feet of sod to be purchased; or, cubic yards of soil or amendments needed for a specific project.

 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, weekends and holidays as needed. Subject to "on­call/stand­by" duty.

 

 

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

Prior to employment, this position requires:

 

Valid Class "C" driver's license with good driving record and ability to maintain while employed.

 

The Certified Professional Turfgrass Manager certification from the Texas Turfgrass Association; The Certified Sports Field Manager certification from the Sports Turf Managers Association; or the minimum of an Associate's Degree, applicable experience listed under the "Education and Experience" section, demonstrated ability to meet necessary standards and commitment to attain the Texas Turfgrass Association's CPTM certification; or an approved equivalent combination of licenses, certifications, demonstrated ability, and experience.

 

As conditions of passing probation, candidate must possess or obtain:

 

  • Class "B" commercial driver's license within six months of hire; and,
  • TDA Non­commercial pesticide applicator license within six months of hire.

 

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work involves extreme exposure to disagreeable elements, noise and smoke fumes; involves continuous outdoor work with frequent exposure to poor weather conditions; physical demands include frequent lifting of heavy objects weighing 100 lbs. Continuous physical exertion, requiring heavy muscular effort with resulting fatigue of arms, legs, back or sensory facilities.
