Description | Purpose of Position: To assess home, school, personal, and community factors that may affect the learning, school adjustment, and general well-being of students in homeless situations. The Family Transition Specialist also educates stakeholders regarding their role and responsibilities.
Qualifications:
- High School Graduate or equivalent
- 48+ college credit in Social Services (i.e. psychology, sociology, social work, etc.)
- Preferred Bachelor's Degree in Social Services ( i.e. psychology, sociology, social work, etc.)
Duties and Responsiblities:
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other faculty/staff as well as parents regarding effective strategies for dealing with problems related to social, emotional, and academic needs of students living in homeless situations
- Participate as part of the team to develop plans that support the social success of McKinney Vento students.
- Provide interventions that will assist in creating positive learning environments for students, including counseling, group work, case management, and crisis intervention.
- Develop resiliency strategies, plans, programs and services that build self-esteem, nurture positive development, and help to bond these students to the school community.
- Identify students living in homeless situations who are in need of support services aimed at addressing factors that may be adversely affecting attendance.
- Participate in the Student Success Team process for students on caseload.
- Implement strategies to improve the attendance of students in homeless situations.
- Perform effective crisis response and management services for students, families, and school personnel as the need arises for students.
- Coordinate social services resources within and outside the school system for use by homeless students and their families.
- Share knowledge and skills with parents, students, and staff regarding issues related to homeless children and youth.
- Participate in program planning and implementation, including needs assessment and evaluation components.
- Coordinate with Student Services to distribute residency questionnaires in order to identify students who meet federal guidelines for homelessness under McKinney-Vento.
- Maintain data for tracking homeless in the district.
- Will maintain professional competence through participation in Professional Learning, PLCs and in self-selected professional growth activities.
- Participate as appropriate, in the development of training programs for staff and families related to the mental health needs of students.
- Participate on various committees, projects and task forces at the site and district levels to address a wide range of issues relevant to needs of students living in homeless.
- Other duties as assigned.
Calendar: 195 days + $1,200 TRAVEL STIPEND
