C.E. King Middle School in fast-growth Sheldon ISD in northeast Houston is seeking a full-time Theatre Teacher (Grades 6-8) who can start immediately in the spring of 2024. This position will focus on both Theatre classes and directorship of theatre productions, so expertise and experience in both the acting/directing and technical theatre sides is preferred. King MS has an expansive theatre facility that includes a 1500+ seat auditorium and stage, theatre lighting and sound, a black box theatre classroom, and ample scene shop/storage space, KMS won 1st Place at the UIL One Act Play Competition last year and is well-positioned for early success. This program feeds C.E. King High School, which earned 26 Tommy Tune Award Nominations this year and whose UIL One Act Plays regularly advance. District teacher salaries, stipends, and budgets are competitive, and the Fine Arts programs are well supported. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree or higher from a recognized, accredited college or university; Valid teaching certificate appropriate for teaching assignment; Successful completion of student teaching/internship or alternative certification program (ACP); Strong communication skills; Demonstrates skills in leading, motivating and cooperating with students, parents, teachers and administrators; Knowledge of EdTA and U.I.L. rules and procedures; General knowledge of curriculum and instruction; Demonstrate ability to grow and maintain a large, successful theatre arts program in a public school setting; TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Probationary/Term Contract: 187 days ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Develop and maintain a safe classroom environment conducive to effective teaching and learning; Recruit and retain students in the theatre arts program; Collaborate with building fine arts staff and vertical staff; Maintain emotional control under stress; Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible behavior; Maintain confidentiality; Work frequently prolonged and irregular hours; Prepare students for success at auditions and competitions; Prepare and stage productions for successful performances and competitions; Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job function. WORKING CONDITIONS: Tools/equipment used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment, hand and power tools, theatrical lighting, sound consoles, and other theatrical/stage equipment. Posture: Frequent, prolonged standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing. Motion: Frequent walking, and climbing. Lifting: Regular moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); may lift and move building materials, costumes, lighting equipment, props, sound equipment, etc. Environment: Exposure to set construction debris, dust, paint and other items associated with theatrical production. Must be comfortable with heights. Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent travel and frequent travel by school bus.
